Putting Together A Fine Art Image

Background

I’ve recently started to work on fine art images.  This image is of my daughter.  She is 14 and about to start 8th grade.  It seems like only yesterday when I was driving her home from the hospital when she was born.  It’s amazing how fast time flies. . . .

Inspired by the photographer, Brooke Shaden, I wanted to capture my daughter in a youthful, painterly type setting.  After some brainstorming, I came up with the idea of a sunflower umbrella.  I had already made a sunflower headpiece so I thought a sunflower umbrella would be a natural compliment.

The Technical Part

To make this image, I started by setting up an umbrella on a light stand.  I also setup my camera on a tripod with multiple exposures configured.  I had a profoto light setup on a light stand and kept it in the same location for the entire set.  I then took a sunflower with a pair of pliers held in in different locations around the umbrella as the camera recorded the images.  Once I felt like I had enough sunflowers in different positions, I asked my daughter to come to the camera room to hold the umbrella (still connected to the light stand) and pose in a ballet type pose.  I took one final image of her and then did the rest of the work in Photoshop.  I digitally cut out each sunflower and placed it on or around the umbrella.  Since the light source and camera position were constant for each exposure, the final image looks natural.  I finished off the image with a texture from Alien Skin.  I’m pleased with the final image and look forward to making more in the future.
